Rei Umekubo - Partner

Rei Umekubo is the co-founder of APEX Pacific Partners Advisors, LLC. Rei is also Sole Principal of Pilot Capital Investments, LLC, a Los Angeles-based real estate investment and management company founded in 2010, which acquires real estate interests primarily in the western United States on behalf of his family office.

Prior to founding Pilot Capital Investments, Rei was Managing Director and Country Head of Australia for Morgan Stanley Real Estate Funds (“MSREF”) for 4 years from 2007. His responsibilities included overseeing the investing activities of MSREF’s flagship opportunistic funds in Australia, as well as continued responsibility for the major assets he purchased throughout Asia in those funds while previously based in Tokyo, Japan. While based in Australia, Rei was responsible for acquiring and managing over $6.5 Billion of real estate assets, and also held a dual-role as Chairman of Investa Property Group, one of the largest Australian REITs which was wholly-acquired, privatized and controlled by MSREF in 2007.

Prior to being Country Head of Australia, Rei was based in Tokyo, Japan for 8 years with Morgan Stanley as Managing Director. He initiated MSREF’s hard asset investment platform and was one of the executive team that was responsible for acquiring and managing MSREF’s real estate investments in Japan and Asia. Of the approximately $22 Billion of real estate assets this executive team was responsible for acquiring from 2000 to 2006, Rei was personally responsible for acquiring and managing over $8 Billion of hard assets, including office buildings, multi-family residential properties, retail properties and industrial buildings.

Previous to joining Morgan Stanley, Rei was affiliated with several Robert M. Bass Group-related investment entities. In 1998, he moved to Tokyo, Japan to set-up daVinci Advisors Japan, an investment vehicle originally capitalized by the Bass Group, DLJ Real Estate and Westbrook Partners, to invest in Japanese hard asset real estate, and where he was responsible for overseeing acquisition, underwriting and asset management of approximately $300million of real estate during his less than two year association with that firm.

Prior to daVinci Advisors, Rei was Vice President of Lone Star Opportunity Funds (formerly known as Brazos Fund), a Dallas-based investment firm, also originally funded by the Bass Group and specializing in distressed hard asset real estate and non-performing real estate debt investing globally, where he was responsible for underwriting and managing over $500 million of real estate and non- performing loans across the US and Europe and in Japan

Prior to Lone Star/Brazos, Rei started his career in 1986 with RMB Realty (fka, Ameribass Realty), the real estate investment arm of the Robert M. Bass Group, where he was responsible for underwriting and managing over $200 million of office, industrial, retail, hotel and residential land subdivision assets throughout Southern California

Rei was born and raised in Los Angeles and graduated in 1985 from the University of Southern California with a B.S. degree in Finance and Business Economics.
